Dystopian Fairytale

Following the cataclysmic election of 2016, we felt an unraveling of progressive human rights democratic values and an impending danger to us as a society and more specifically as artists. We could foresee a lack of compassion and humanity spreading across the United States, it felt akin to the historic falls of democracies when dictatorships take over. As artists we felt compelled to create a film that would encapsulate the feeling of that moment, an outlet for us and for all the creatives who surrounded us in Los Angeles. To that end we gave ourselves what felt like impossible deadlines to achieve:

  1. We would cast the film with artists we wanted to collaborate with before having a story.

  2. All actors would be cast through conversation, no auditioning.

  3. We would workshop our ideas with all artists involved to create a collaborative vision.

  4. The film was to be done in under 6 months from conception to the last day of filming.

  5. We would keep the film local to Downtown Los Angeles using only resources we could obtain for free.

  6. We would always stay true to the original concept of the banality of evil.

  7. We would remain open to the journey that the film led us on and never dictate its course.

What followed was a journey of mayhem, experiment and complete abandon. We took one month casting the film and meeting with the actors. We would explain to each actor the class system of the film and ask them what class they wanted to be in.

After casting we workshopped the project for three weeks, each actor developed their own character in their own words. Following workshopping we created a story with our cinematographer and then Rebekah and I wrote the script in under two weeks.

Some cast members dropped out and new creatives were brought in, we did not keep to gender roles during recasting.

We then began filming and shot the film in under six weeks in ten locations. What came out was beyond any of our imagination, it was a culmination of our entire group’s fears and anxieties that created a dystopian fairytale like nonother.
